RECEIVER STATION AND PROTECTIVE CASE FOR A PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE
Field of the invention The invention relates to a kit comprising a docking station for charging a portable electronic device and a removable protective case for the portable electronic device.
Description of the prior art
Different docking stations have been designed to be used with portable electronic devices to recharge the batteries of the latter. Typically, such a docking station has a recess having a particular shape and dimensions corresponding to the outer shape of the portable electronic device to allow guiding and maintaining the device in the docking station. The insertion of the device into the docking station causes an electrical connector provided on the docking station to connect to a corresponding electrical connector provided on the portable electronic device, which allows the transfer of electrical energy from the docking station. welcome to the device to recharge the battery of the latter.
Such docking stations are known from, for example, US Pat. No. 5,317,691. The docking station comprises a recess surrounded by an envelope having opposite side walls, a front wall and a rear wall. An electrical connector is provided on a bottom wall of the station for the transfer of energy to the portable electronic device when it is installed in the recess.
Portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones or portable digital assistants (PDAs), are generally provided with a removable protective case for protecting and / or decorating the outer shell of the portable electronic device.
When it is desired to charge a portable electronic device using the docking station described above, the protective case must be removed before inserting the device into the docking station. After recharging, the protective case must be replaced on the portable electronic device. The repetitive operations of removing and replacing the protective case are very boring tasks. These tasks are time consuming, annoying and can lead to faster deterioration or uneven wear of the protective case and / or portable electronic device. Other docking stations allow the recharge of a portable electronic device, whether or not provided with a protective case. For example, an adapter that is fitted to the dimensions of the portable electronic device or the protective case can be installed on the docking station, and serve as an intermediate component between the portable electronic device and the docking station. This solution is far from practical because one must use and transport several basic bodies. In addition, when the portable electronic device has large dimensions, the adapter also has large dimensions, which can be very bulky.
Another solution for the installation on a docking station of a portable electronic device with or without its protective case is to mount the electrical connector of the docking station on its bottom surface and to provide on the station home a simple back support at a sufficient lateral distance from the electrical connector to allow the installation of the device with or without its protective case. These docking stations do not have side guides and / or front guides. This solution is not practical because the connection between the portable electronic device and the electrical connector of the docking station is tedious and imprecise due to the lack of physical guidance. It also leads to faster deterioration and uneven wear of the electrical connectors. Summary of the invention
An object of the invention lies in the provision of a docking station for charging a portable electronic device via a connector of the portable electronic device, and a protective case for said portable electronic device, which solve the above problems. The invention is defined by the dependent claims. The dependent claims define advantageous embodiments.
According to the invention, a kit is provided for protecting and recharging a portable electronic device via a first connector of the portable electronic device, said kit comprising: a docking station comprising a second connector adapted to connecting to the first connector according to an insertion axis AA 'and having a plurality of guides arranged and dimensioned to guide the portable electronic device in sliding towards the second connector and along the axis of insertion AA' when the portable electronic device is inserted between the guides; and a removable protective case adapted to be mounted around the portable electronic device, said case comprising a first through hole arranged and sized to allow access to the second connector when the removable protective case is mounted around the electronic device portable. The protective case further comprises second through holes arranged to respectively correspond to the arrangement of the guides, said second through holes having dimensions equal to or exceeding respectively the dimensions of the corresponding guides. In other words, the second through holes are shaped so that a volume occupied by the material of the protective case does not intersect with a volume occupied by the material of the guides when the portable electronic device is covered with the protective case and installed in the docking station.
With this configuration, the guides of the docking station are able to come into contact with the outer shell (or housing) of the device when it is covered with the protective case, so as to guide the sliding device and its first connector to the second connector and the axis of insertion AA '. In other words, a kit according to the invention allows the guided installation of the portable electronic device in the docking station, regardless of the presence or absence of the protective case on the portable electronic device.
Preferably, the kit according to the invention comprises a cradle-shaped docking station having a recess shaped and dimensioned to receive the portable electronic device when it is covered with the protective case, and the guides make protruding inwards into the recess.
In such a case, the shape and dimensions of the recess allow the insertion of a portable electronic device, whether or not it has a protective case, and the docking station is more robust, as well as the guides, which increases the expected life of these elements.
More particularly, the kit according to the invention comprises at least five guides which are dimensioned and arranged so as to limit a displacement of the portable electronic device, when the portable electronic device is inserted between said five guides, to only one displacement in linear translation according to the insertion axis AA '. The protective case then obviously also comprises second through holes, five in number, and arranged to respectively correspond to the arrangement of the five guides, said second through holes each having dimensions equal to or exceeding respectively the dimensions of the corresponding guides.
Such an arrangement of the guides and second through holes forces the portable electronic device to follow a linear translational movement along the axis of insertion AA 'and towards or away from the second connector of the docking station, which improves even more the correct connection between the first and second connectors. In an alternative or complementary manner, at least one guide further comprises a first locking means configured to cooperate with a second locking means provided on the portable electronic device to allow mechanical locking of the portable electronic device on the docking station. when the first connector is connected to the second connector. This avoids unwanted disconnection of the portable electronic device.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
We will now describe various embodiments of the present invention.
Figure 1 is a top view of a kit according to a first embodiment representative of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the kit of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a partial sectional front view of the kit of Figure 1. Figure 4 is a perspective view of the kit of Figure 1. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the kit of Figure 1 when used with a portable electronic device.
The portable electronic device may for example be a personal digital assistant (PDA), or a mobile phone, or a portable music player, or a GPS receiver, or a remote control, or a voice recorder. These devices usually work on an internal battery that needs to be recharged from time to time. In these devices, electrical and / or electronic circuits connect the internal battery to a first connector (301) to which external power can be applied to recharge the internal batteries.
As shown in Figures 1 to 5, the kit includes a docking station (100) and a removable protective case (200) that is adapted to cover at least a portion of a body of the portable electronic device (300) .
The docking station (100) is a device on which the portable electronic device can be installed to recharge the internal battery thereof via its first connector (301). For this purpose, the docking station (100) comprises a second connector (101), which is adapted to be connected to the first connector (301) along an insertion axis AA '. The insertion axis AA ', which is better seen in FIG. 2, is the nominal insertion axis of the first connector in the second connector, or vice versa.
The docking station also includes electrical and / or electronic circuits (102, 103, 104) for connecting its second connector (101) to a power supply, which may be an internal power supply such as a battery included in the docking station, or an external power supply such as the mains power supply, possibly via a transformer and / or additional circuits. Therefore, when the portable electronic device is installed on the docking station such that the first and second connectors are connected to each other, charging of the internal battery of the portable electronic device occurs. These elements are well known in the art and will not be described in more detail.
The docking station further comprises a plurality of guides (111, 121, 131, 141, 151). These guides are arranged and dimensioned so as to guide the portable electronic device in sliding towards the second connector (101) and along the axis of insertion AA 'when the portable electronic device is inserted between said guides. This guidance therefore brings the first connector (301) into proper alignment with the second connector (101) for proper connection thereof.
It will be understood that the guides are arranged and sized to slidably engage an outer surface (310) of the portable device (300).
In the example of Figures 1 to 5, the portable electronic device has essentially the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped, like most of these devices, and the guides also have the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped. Depending on the shape and dimensions of the portable electronic device, the guides may nevertheless have a variety of shapes and sizes, and they may be present in any number and arranged at different positions on the docking station, provided that they are adapted to guide the portable electronic device in sliding towards the second connector (101) and along the insertion axis AA '.
The kit also includes a removable protective case (200) that is adapted to be mounted around the portable electronic device (300) to protect the portable electronic device (300), for example from bumps or scratches. The protective case preferably does not cover control buttons and / or a screen of the device (300) to allow direct access thereto.
By "removable", it is understood that the protective case (200) is adapted to be mounted around the portable electronic device and to be removed from the portable electronic device without the aid of any tool. The case (200) comprises at least a first through hole (201) arranged and dimensioned to allow access to the second connector (301) of the device (300). In general, the second connector (301) is placed on a bottom face of the portable device (300), as well as, in this case, the first through hole. Therefore, when the removable protective case (200) is mounted around the portable electronic device (300), the second connector (301) can be connected to the second connector (101) without removing the case (200). The holster further comprises second through-holes (211, 221, 231, 241) which are arranged (i.e., positioned) to respectively correspond to the arrangement (i.e., the position) of the guides (111, 121 , 131, 141, 151) on the docking station (100). These second through holes are further dimensioned so as to equal or exceed respectively the dimensions of their corresponding guides. In other words, the second through holes are shaped so that a volume occupied by the material of the protective case does not intersect with a volume occupied by the material of the guides when the portable electronic device is covered with the protective case and installed in the docking station. Therefore, the presence of the protective case (200) on the portable electronic device (300) will not interfere with the guidance of said device by the guides during the installation of said device on the docking station (100). The guides will interact directly with the outer casing (310) of the device (300), regardless of the presence or absence of the protective case of the device. Therefore, the portable electronic device is always correctly guided to the second connector and the second connector will always be correctly aligned with the first connector when they are connected to each other. The user does not need to remove or replace the case when he wants to connect his portable device, and the risk of damage to the first and / or second electrical connector is reduced.
When the portable electronic device is inserted between the guides, it is guided and moves in translation along the axis of insertion AA ', as represented by a solid double arrow in Figures 2 to 5. The guides are in sliding contact with the outer shell (310) of the portable device (300), limiting the movement of the device. Therefore, the first connector (301) and the second connector (101) are perfectly aligned during the installation of the portable electronic device in the docking station.
The second through holes may have different shapes and sizes. For example, as best seen in Figures 2 and 3, a second lateral through-hole (231) has dimensions that exceed the dimensions of the corresponding lateral guide (131). A second hole opening before (241) is much larger than the front guide (141), allowing direct access to the screen and control buttons of the portable electronic device.
Preferably, the guides (111, 121, 131, 141) are guide rails. More particularly, the guide rails are straight and parallel to the insertion axis AA ', as illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 5, each of the guides (111, 121, 131, 141) having a parallelepiped shape and a flat guide surface which is parallel to the insertion axis AA '.
Figure 6 is a top view of a kit according to a preferred embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, the docking station is in the form of a cradle having a recess. The recess is dimensioned and shaped to receive the portable electronic device (100) when it is covered with the protective case (200). The guides (111, 121, 131, 141, 151) project inwardly into the recess. The recess may for example have opposite side portions, a rear portion and a front portion. These portions need not be contiguous and may extend independently from a bottom portion of the docking station. In a preferred embodiment, these portions are contiguous. In yet another preferred embodiment, the front portion has a lower height than the other portions to release access to control buttons and / or the display of the device (300) when it is installed in the docking station. The side parts, the front part, the rear part and the bottom part of the cradle may for example be molded plastic parts having guides extending from these parts inside the recess. In another manner, the recess does not have a physical front portion, but includes lips that extend laterally from each of the side portions toward the front portion.
Such an embodiment reinforces the guides, reducing the risk of bending guides when the portable electronic device is installed in the docking station with too much force, for example.
Preferably, when the portable electronic device has essentially a parallelepiped shape, at least 5 guides (111, 121, 131, 141, 151) are provided on the docking station (100). More preferably, a guide (111) is provided on a first side portion of the docking station; a guide (131) is provided on a second lateral part of the docking station opposite to the first lateral part, a guide (121) is provided on a rear part of the docking station, two guides (141, 151) are provided on a front part of the docking station, as shown in Figures 1 to 4. Therefore, the casing of the removable cases comprises five corresponding second through holes (211,221,231,241,251) arranged to correspond respectively to the arranging the guides (111, 121, 131, 141, 151). The removable case shell (200) may include an additional through hole to allow access to the screen and / or buttons of the portable electronic device (300).
Preferably, at least one of the guides (111, 121, 131, 141, 151) is resiliently movable in a direction transverse to the insertion axis AA '. The elastically movable guide may for example be provided on a side portion of the docking station. When the device is inserted between the guides, the elastically movable guide is pushed outwards. When the portable electronic device is removed from the docking station, the movable guide returns to its home position. This facilitates the positioning of the portable device between the guides by the user because it requires much less precision when it is desired to install the portable device on the docking station.
When the docking station is in the form of a cradle having a recess, the resiliently movable rest guide preferably protrudes into the recess when the portable electronic device (300) is inserted between the guides. This arrangement compresses the portable device between the guides, further reducing the risk of unwanted disconnection. The resiliently movable guide may for example be mounted on a spring.
It can be provided more than one elastically movable guide. Two guides may be elastically movable, either facing each other or perpendicular to each other. For example and according to Figure 1, a first guide (111) and a second guide (131) are opposite each other and can be elastically movable. In another manner, a first guide (121) and a second guide (131) are perpendicular to each other and can be elastically movable. In another way or in a complementary manner, when the recess has the shape of a parallelepiped, two movable guides may be arranged on the same part of the parallelepiped, for example on the rear part of the recess.
Preferably, at least two guides are arranged on a front part of the docking station. A first front guide is shaped with a first lip protruding from a first side portion of the docking station and a second front guide is shaped with a second lip projecting from a second side portion of the docking station opposite the first side part. With this embodiment, control buttons and / or the screen of the portable device can be reached directly when the device is installed on the docking station, and the linear translation of the device is still ensured, while only part limited front of the device is covered by the guides. In a more preferred embodiment, the front face further includes an additional lip extending from a bottom face portion of the docking station. This additional lip allows tighter support of the portable device when it is in place, and avoids an inconvenient disconnection.
Preferably, each of the second through holes (211,221,231, ...) is disposed at least 0.5 mm from a corner of the removable protective case (200). This protective case protects the edges of the portable electronic device. Furthermore, any two adjacent second through holes (211, 211, 231) are preferably separated from each other by at least 0.5 mm, so that portions of the holster located between the second through holes are less prone to tearing or deformation.
Preferably, the removable protective case (200) is shaped and dimensioned so as to avoid any direct contact between the portable electronic device (300) and the docking station (100) with the exception of the guides (111, 121 , 131, 141, 151 ..) and the second connector (101) when the removable protective case (200) is mounted around the portable electronic device (300) and when the device (300) is inserted between the guides. With this embodiment, the guidance is provided solely by the contact between the guides and the external surface of the portable electronic device, which avoids any bad guidance.
Preferably, the removable protective case (200) comprises a rigid material extending in the direction of the axis of insertion AA 'from a bottom portion of the removable protective case (200) to a height corresponding at least to a length of the guides taken in the direction of the axis of insertion AA '. The bottom portion of the removable case (200) is the portion of the case in which the first through-hole (201) is disposed. The rigid material may be for example a molded plastic such as polyethylene. This embodiment avoids a deformation of the protective case (200) in case of contact between the case (200) and the guides. The rest of the removable protective case may be a rigid material, or a flexible and flexible material to improve handling or comfort.
Preferably, at least one guide further comprises a first locking means configured to cooperate with a second locking means located on the outer shell (310) of the portable electronic device (300) when the first connector (301) and the second connector (101) are connected to each other. This allows locking of the device (300) when it is in place on the docking station, which avoids an inconvenient disconnection.
Preferably, each guide has a guide length which is greater than 20%, preferably greater than 30%, more preferably greater than 50% of a length of the portable electronic device (300), said lengths being taken in the direction of the insertion axis AA '. Ensuring a minimum guide length will indeed reduce the risk of misguiding the portable device.
More preferably, a bottom portion of the docking station has at least one bottom guide, and the protective case has a corresponding through hole. This bottom guide reduces the risk of poor connection between the first connector and the second connector when the mobile device has been misguided during its displacement in translation to the second connector, for example when the device is forced between the other guides.
Figure 7 is a top view of a kit according to yet another preferred embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, the kit further comprises a portable electronic device (300) having at least two grooves (311,331) on an outer shell (310) of the portable device (300), and at least two guides (111,131). among the plurality of guides of the docking station (100) are arranged and sized to cooperate with the at least two grooves (311,331). In the example of Figure 7, the two grooves (311,331) are disposed on opposite sides of the outer shell (310). Therefore, the protective case (200) has two second through holes (211,231) arranged to respectively correspond to the arrangement of the guides (111, 131) and whose dimensions equal or exceed the dimensions of the corresponding guides.
The present invention has been described in terms of specific embodiments, which are illustrative of the invention and which should not be construed as limiting. More generally, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that the present invention is not limited by what has been shown and / or specifically described above.
